Starting paper bag, cup or tableware production: which machine for which product
Which machine makes which paper product: bag machines by bag type, cup machine speeds and sizes, plate presses, paper gsm, PE coating, space and staff.

Paper packaging is a volume business with thin margins per piece. The machine has to match the product your customers buy, run the paper you can source, and fit into a line that also includes printing, cutting and packing. This guide maps products to machines and lists what each one needs from your plant.
Start from the product
Before comparing machines, pin down the item, sizes, paper, printing, and who buys it. A bakery bag and a boutique shopping bag look similar on a shelf and come from completely different machines.
Paper bags: the bag type decides the machine
V-bottom bags
The simple folded bag used for bakery, takeout, snacks and pharmacy. V-bottom machines are roll-fed, compact and fast: published speeds for automatic models run from about 60 to several hundred bags per minute on light paper of roughly 40 to 80 gsm. They normally make bags without handles.
Square-bottom bags
Also called flat-bottom or block-bottom bags, these stand open on a flat base. Grocery, takeout and retail shopping bags use this type. Published roll-fed square-bottom machines typically top out around 180 bags per minute on kraft of roughly 50 to 170 gsm, with speed dropping for larger bags. Handle units add twisted paper rope or flat paper handles inline. These lines are large: one published roll-fed model with twisted handles is about 12 m long, weighs over 13 tonnes and draws about 30 kW.
Sheet-fed bags
Branded retail and gift bags on heavier printed or laminated stock come from sheet-fed machines, which take pre-printed sheets of roughly 90 to 250 gsm. They run slower, in the range of tens of bags per minute, but handle papers that roll-fed machines cannot.
Printing sits in front of all of these. Roll-fed lines often use an inline or separate flexo printer, while sheet-fed work usually comes from an offset or digital press. Decide early whether you print in-house or buy printed rolls and sheets.
Paper cups
A cup forming machine takes printed, die-cut, fan-shaped side walls, wraps them around a mandrel, seals the side seam, punches and seals a bottom disc (on many machines from a narrow roll fed into the machine), then curls the rim. A cup line is therefore at least three steps: printing, die cutting and forming. Some suppliers offer inline printing and die-cutting machines that turn rolls into finished fans in one pass, or you can buy printed fans from a converter while you start.
Published specifications for single-line paper cup machines typically look like this:
- Speed: about 80 to 150 cups per minute, depending on model and cup size.
- Sizes: each machine covers a range, commonly around 4 to 12 oz or 4 to 16 oz, with larger models reaching about 22 oz. Each size needs its own mould set, and changing sizes takes time.
- Paper: PE-coated cupstock of about 150 to 350 gsm.
- Utilities: roughly 7.5 to 12 kW of three-phase power and compressed air at about 0.4 to 0.8 MPa. Footprint around 2.5 to 2.8 m by 1.35 m, and 2.5 to 3 tonnes.
Double-wall and ripple cups need an additional machine that wraps the outer layer onto a formed cup.
Cupstock and coating
Hot drink cups usually use board coated with PE on one side, the inside. Cold drink cups use PE on both sides so condensation on the outside does not soften the wall. PE coating weights typically fall around 10 to 30 gsm per side. Heavier board suits larger cups: roughly 190 to 210 gsm for a 7 oz cup and 210 to 250 gsm for a 12 oz cup are common starting points. If customers ask for plastic-free or compostable cups, confirm that the machine can seal the aqueous or bioplastic coated board you plan to use before you buy. Either way, get documentation from your paper supplier that the board and coating are suitable for food contact.
Plates, bowls and trays
Paper plate and tray machines press flat blanks between heated moulds. They range from simple hydraulic presses to automatic pneumatic machines that feed, form and eject on their own. One published automatic pneumatic model runs 50 to 70 pieces per minute for plates of about 4 to 11 inches, on board from 100 up to 1000 gsm. The machine itself is small, about 1.3 x 1.4 m, and draws only about 3 kW, but it specifies compressed air at 0.8 MPa and 1.5 m³ per minute, which calls for a proper industrial compressor, not a small shop unit. Blanks are usually printed and cut on separate equipment, or bought in.
Plates are often the simplest way into paper tableware. Moulds are specific to each shape and size, so start with the few sizes your customers order most. Paper straws are a separate product with their own winding and cutting machines.
Raw materials
- Bags: kraft rolls in the width your machine specifies, food-grade where bags touch food, plus glue and handle material.
- Cups: PE-coated cupstock for side walls, plus narrow bottom-stock rolls.
- Plates: paperboard, often coated for grease and moisture resistance.
Paper is a large share of the cost per piece, so price it with more than one mill or distributor before building your business case. Rolls are heavy and need dry storage and proper handling equipment.
Space, power and air
- Space: plan for the machines, raw material storage, printing and cutting, finished goods and packing. A roll-fed square-bottom bag line alone can be over 12 m long.
- Power: most of these machines are three-phase. Machines built for other markets are often wired for 380 V, while many Canadian plants run 600 V three-phase, so plan for transformers or rewiring, and for electrical certification or a field evaluation before the machine is connected.
- Air: cup and plate machines use compressed air continuously. Add up the flow of every machine and size the compressor and dryer with margin.
Staffing
Brochure output figures assume a trained operator and steady material. Plan for an operator on every running line, someone who can change moulds and sizes and adjust heaters and glue, and people for packing and quality checks. Ask each supplier what staffing its speed figure assumes and how long training on your product takes.
Check the market rules
Federal, provincial and municipal rules on single-use plastics shape demand for paper products and have changed several times recently, so check what applies to your customers before you commit.
Checklist
- Pick the product, sizes and paper grade your first customers will buy.
- Decide whether you print and die-cut in-house or buy printed material.
- Get paper pricing from at least two suppliers.
- Plan floor space for the line, storage and packing.
- Confirm three-phase voltage, compressed air capacity and electrical approval.
- Ask for the staffing and material assumptions behind every speed figure.
